Joey Alexander is one of jazz's most internationally successful pianists, admired and promoted by Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea and Wynton Marsalis – with numerous albums under his own name and three Grammy nominations, sold-out solo concerts at Carnegie Hall or at the invitation of the Obamas at the White House. And he is only 22 years old. Not that Joey Alexander needed a certain age to sound like an adult. When the slender pianist with the big glasses brings his trio to Germany for a few selected concerts this November, all that, his career so far, the many praises and the awards, will be secondary at best. In the foreground is the music, a mixture of wonderful original compositions, very spiritual and often with a little Latin flavor, and well-known classics from John Coltrane to Monk or Herbie Hancock to Sting. The way Joey Alexander and his fellow musicians play this music, as brilliant as it is light-footed, makes these performances a special experience. It's hard to imagine that this is just the beginning – you can almost witness Joey Alexander's development and see his star rise even further with every further appearance and every new recording.
