He is the congenial power drummer of the legendary Esbjörn Svensson Trio "e.s.t.". e.s.t. developed into the most important European jazz band of their time, which succeeded in inspiring a completely new audience for their music with a mixture of irresistible melodies, almost hypnotic grooves, an impressive stage presence and the combination of jazz elements with pop and electronics. The career of e.s.t. ended at its peak with the tragic accidental death of pianist Esbjörn Svensson in 2008. As early as 2011, Magnus Öström's first own musical signs of life appeared. The hauntingly dark sound of the debut album, drawing on jazz, progressive rock, drum'n'bass and minimal music, was an attempt to artistically process a great loss and at the same time Magnus Öström's step back into (musical) life. The album was nominated for the Swedish Grammy. Öström also received the Echo Jazz 2012 as the best drummer internationally for the album. "A Room For Travellers", released in 2023, is the group's fourth album, which is both about the traveler's journey through the world, but also about a journey inwards. In Magnus' own words, he hopes that music can serve as a change from everything that is happening in the world. But it is just as much intended to inspire a journey into one's own inner self.
