© Steven HaberlandOver the 20 years in which he has recorded highly acclaimed albums under his own name and has played several times at the Jazz Baltica Festival, the Hamburg pianist Martin Ehlers has remained completely incorruptible in his aesthetics of euphony. He still takes great pleasure in polishing the surfaces of his compositions to a high gloss in a way that flatters the senses, in order to discreetly but with meticulous craftsmanship and technical finesse place deep layer after deep layer underneath. This North German understatement is reminiscent of Scandinavian jazz's ability to combine lightness and sophistication at a high level, which has become a trademark. His trio is excellently cast and, despite its longevity, has so far managed with a single line-up, which also had spatial reasons. In addition to Ehlers, Kai Bussenius currently plays drums, in whose own trio Michael Wollny once sat at the piano, and double bass player Thomas Biller, a member of Joja Wendt's band, among others. After their last sold-out concert at the Nica Jazz Club at the beginning of 2025 and the release concert of the new, 6th album "EASE", the Martin Ehlers Trio will perform again at Nica. As always, this will be a real celebration!
