Roberto Fonseca, one of the most outstanding Cuban jazz pianists of our time. With its unique mix of Cuban rhythms, African tradition and modern jazz, Fonseca ignites a musical firework display that puts its listeners in an ecstatic atmosphere.
The latest album La Gran Diversión (The Great Pleasure) is a masterpiece that celebrates Fonseca's creative genius. With pulsating rhythms, virtuoso piano improvisations and an irresistible energy, the artist takes us to Cuba from the 1930s to the present day. A world full of joy and musical diversity.
Since the beginning of his international career, the pianist has amazed audiences and critics alike with his unique combination of virtuosity, charisma and authenticity. He has played a role in the development of contemporary Cuban music that can hardly be overestimated. When the great Ruben Gonzalez died in 2003, the young Roberto Fonseca moved up as a full member of the Buena Vista Social Club and subsequently became a musical highlight of the ensemble, which toured worldwide in changing line-ups. And most recently as an arranger and pianist of the bands of Ibrahim Ferrer and Omara Portuondo. In addition, Fonseca played with the American jazz stars Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter and Michael Brecker.
The repertoire and creative energy of this artist seems to be inexhaustible. He flirts with jazz, blues, funk, hip-hop, rap, afro, drum 'n' bass, classical music and soul and yet has Cuban music in his blood like no other. He loves the percussive element and at no point denies the Afro-Cuban roots of his playing.
